Thoughts on New Orleans

There is a lot of concern as to whether or not New Orleans weill be rebuilt, or more precisely, of how much will be rebuilt. There is also the question of whether the government should finance the rebuilding of a city like New Orleans when it is obviously in a very dangerous location. Put another way, why should we pay more so that people can build in an area prone to floods?

But there is a thought that I have not heard anyone say yet (except me):

How many people would be willing to pay (through the government) to rebuild New Orleans, even if it meant higher taxes, even if it is in a precarious place, even if this will all happen again in 20 years, just to make certain that the refugees go back there? I have a feeling that there are very few communities that want to accept large numbers of poor, mostly black refugees, particularly from a city such as New Orleans that is usually thought of as a rather sleazy and slummy city. Racist or not, I have a feeling that a lot of people feel this way. Would people be willing to pay in order not to have to accept them?

Time will tell, I suppose.

That is all.
